Volvo Penta unveils a 100% electric version of its IPS system

Swedish engine manufacturer Volvo Penta is expanding its marine propulsion offering with a new range of all-electric IPS systems. This development is aimed primarily at the professional market, which is looking for low-emission solutions and greater operational flexibility.

An electrical version of the IPS system

Already tried and tested with internal combustion and hybrid engines, the IPS (Inboard Performance System) is now available in an electric version. This platform retains the principles that have made it such a success: steerable pods with propellers in forward position, joystick control, assisted piloting and dynamic positioning.

Volvo Penta announces five modular propulsion lines, with unit power ratings from 374 to 1,100 kW. The first model available will be the IPS900E, with up to 515 kW, scheduled for late 2025. It will be followed by more compact versions (IPS650E) and higher ranges capable of meeting needs up to 4.5 MW for four-line configurations.

Architecture designed for integration

All the existing functionalities of the IPS platform are maintained: on-board electronic control (EVC), multi-energy modes (electric, hybrid or internal combustion), and optimized on-board power management. Volvo Penta also plans to use variable- or fixed-speed generators to maintain autonomy for intensive use or when far from recharging facilities.

The system's modularity means it can be installed on a wide range of hull types, including workboats, passenger vessels and coastal logistics vessels.

Towards a standardized energy ecosystem

This new generation is part of an industrial strategy of standardization and openness: compatibility with storage components (ESS batteries), DC infrastructure, and shared control interfaces. Volvo Penta relies on its subsidiary ZEM, an expert in electric propulsion systems, to supply a complete architecture, ready to integrate multi-brand solutions according to the specific requirements of each worksite.

A gradual transition to clean propulsion

Volvo Penta's strategy is based on technological diversification: offering hybrid or electric solutions without breaking with current standards, to enable a gradual transition, particularly for shipowners subject to new environmental obligations such as FuelEU Maritime or ECA zones.

The launch of this electric IPS range marks a step towards the electrification of professional vessels. This trend could eventually extend to pleasure yachts and mixed-use vessels.
