Test / Genesis of the RM 1080: an innovative sailboat combining tradition and modernity

The latest RM is a little out of the ordinary, with its enormous coamings and generous measurements for a yacht just over 10m. As a mid-range model, it takes up RM Yachts' original expertise in CP construction, returning to the fundamentals of the shipyard, while offering innovative solutions.

A unique design in its class

Designed by Marc Lombard Yacht Design, this 10.80-meter model boasts a unique deck layout and multiple configuration options. The new cockpit layout maximizes space by pushing the coamings back to the edge of the freeboard, offering a clear passage and improved ergonomics for maneuvering.

While this technical feature is inspired by the latest Class 40s, the comparison ends there, as the RM 1080 is designed solely for cruising at what we hope are sustained average speeds.

A hybrid CP and composite construction

True to the DNA of the La Rochelle-based shipyard, the RM 1080 adopts a multi-ply plywood construction, then covered with a fiberglass laminate to reinforce its rigidity and durability. The deck, meanwhile, is constructed in glass-reinforced polyester composite (GRP) using vacuum infusion, a technique that guarantees lightness and strength while optimizing the quality of finishes.

This combination of materials offers several advantages: a robust, lightweight structure, excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, and a slightly reduced environmental impact compared to all-polyester constructions.

With a displacement of less than 6 tonnes, this unit is around 15% lighter than a conventional polyester construction.

A wide range of configurations

As standard, the RM 1080 is equipped with twin keels, one or two rudders. A keelboat version, with a smaller displacement, is also available. However, there is no lifting keel on this model, an option which has been offered by the shipyard in the past.

One of the special features of RM Yachts is the ability to customize the appearance of the boat. Unlike molded polyester hulls with predefined hues, the RM 1080 can be painted in over 210 colors, giving free rein to the desires of each owner. This level of personalization is a rare feature in the world of production yachts, but reinforces the unique identity of each unit.
