Alium 42 S, a modern yet elegant design with some clever ideas

Alium's interior design favors outdoor living

Whether at sea or in a marina, the Alium 42 S is an eye-catching boat. A seductive day cruiser with a very modern look, but not lacking in elegance. In this second part we will see that this design is not only attractive, it's also clever.

The 42 S is the brand's first to take to the sea. Aesthetically, it's hard to miss. A long, flowing line with a decked bow, angular shapes and a windshield that barely protrudes above the deck line. From the sharp bow, the boat widens to finish with an open stern extended by a beautiful bathing platform. A pure, modern design.

As soon as you step aboard, you're impressed by the space available. In fact, the Alium is a semi-custom boat, a platform on which each buyer can create his or her own layout. Discussions are then held with the designers and engineers to build an almost tailor-made layout. On the boat we tested, the center of the cockpit features a large dining area that can be converted into an extra-large sunbathing area, while the seats are fitted with storage compartments. In two seconds, just by pushing a button, the table can also disappear into the floor.

A 25 m2 (269 sqft) terrace

Directly in front of this set-up, a block on each edge serves as a kitchen with sink, garbage can, grill, icemaker and no less than three refrigerators. If that's not enough, the cockpit can be significantly enlarged by lowering the two aft bulwarks. In concrete terms, once the bulwarks are lowered, you benefit from a width of 6 m (20 ft) and a terrace of 25 m2 (269 sqft). It's hard to beat that!

On the other side of the galley, there are two comfortable bench seats, one of which is a little smaller on starboard to make room for the helm station. Complete and ergonomic, this helm is complemented by two pilot seats, while the windshield offers effective protection against the wind. Thanks to its side deflectors, this windscreen also protects the cockpit. Behind the bench seats, wide gangways lead to the spacious foredeck where a solarium for two or three people can be accommodated. The cockpit can also accommodate footstools, and the entire aft space can be protected by a bimini. However, there is no provision for shade on the foredeck.

A comfortable cabin for two or four to spend the night

Although the Alium is all about open-air living, the night area is pretty interesting. Three small steps lead to a dining area that can be converted into a double berth. In addition to the beautiful natural lighting, the volume of the interior and the quality of the woodwork are particularly appealing.

Indeed, if it's hard enough to know you're on an aluminum boat when you're in the cockpit, once inside, it's simply impossible. In addition to the front sleeping area, there's plenty of storage space, a small galley and a real toilet with shower, although it's a shame the latter isn't really separated from the rest of the space.

A final surprise: a mid-cabin has been fitted under the cockpit, at a convenient height for overnight accommodation. The only drawback is that this mid-cabin lacks natural lighting. On the other hand, the finish of this cabin is commendable.
