Precise regulations

Since June 2012, newly-registered ships have had to display their registration number in two places on board:

  • on both sides of the hull
  • visible in the cockpit or at cockpit level

These numbers must have a mandatory minimum size.

About the characters on the outside of the hull :

  • For ships from 2.50 to 7.00 m, the characters must be at least 4 cm high, 1.5 cm wide and 0.5 cm thick.
  • For ships from 7.00 to 12.00 m, the characters must be at least 12 cm high, 5 cm wide and 1.5 cm thick.
  • For ships over 12.00 m, the dimensions are free, but must not be less than 12 cm high and 5 cm wide for each character. The minimum line thickness is 1.5 cm

For characters inside the shell :

These must be at least 1 cm high and 1 mm thick.

As you can see from our photo, the registration plate next to the steering wheel complies perfectly with the regulations. Similarly, as this boat is less than 7 m long, the lettering affixed to the outside also complies with regulations.
