Test / Axopar 45 Cross Top: an ultra-high-performance open for thrill-seeking riders

The flagship of the Finnish shipyard, the Axopar 45 is available in several versions: Open, Cross Cabin or Cross Top. We tested the latter off Cannes.

Launched less than 10 years ago, the Finnish shipyard has shown incredible dynamism and has established itself in the high-performance open hull market. Its largest model, the Axopar 45, is available in 5 layout versions. We tested the Cross Top version on the Côte d'Azur.

One hull, 3 deck plans

This 13.90 m hull is the basis for Axopar's range of layout options. This flagship retains the key features that have made its predecessors so successful, namely a narrow step hull offering excellent performance in sustained conditions.

On the Cross Top, the shipyard also offers three aft cockpit versions: U-shaped sofa, aft bench seat or aft cabin. The latter option seems appropriate for a coastal cruising program, doubling the sleeping capacity of the Cross Top version.

A deck layout capable of seating 14 people

Access is via one of the aft ailerons, which is rather narrow for a 45-foot vessel. It will be difficult for an adult to fit in with a child during a swimming session. Despite the boat's 4.11 m beam, these bathing areas lack space, as the transom is "heavily" occupied by the 3 outboards.

This version is equipped with a U-shaped bench seat, which not only accommodates a large number of guests, but can also be transformed into a sunbathing area. It is separated from the 2 e standard deck saloon, with a cabinet housing storage and refrigerated drawers.

Located just behind the cockpit, the galley is equipped with a grill, two hotplates, a sink and a large preparation area. This is the minimum required to prepare a meal for the 14 passengers, who can sit around the two tables provided.

The bulwark tilts on both sides. But, contrary to the current trend, the aim is to gain an extra seat, not to create an extension of the deck to enhance the bathing experience.

Access to the forepeak is via walkways offering good depth. A two-person sunbathing area is located at the front of the cockpit.

It is preceded by two butterfly doors, which provide access to the front cab. While these allow direct communication between inside and outside, the need for two symmetrical doors is debatable.

The semi-enclosed cockpit roof is fitted with racks-like roof racks for storing paddles and kayaks. This solution frees up the deck layout.

One or two cabins for short cruises

The forward cabin is accessed via the companionway to the left of the cockpit. When open, the access door obstructs the helmsman's field of vision. Accessing this cabin while underway can be tricky.

Down in the cabin, the bench seat converts into a berth quite easily, by folding out the bottom of the mattress which acts as a backrest. The atmosphere in this cabin is cosy, but without superfluous features.

The somewhat cramped washroom houses a shower, washbasin and WC. The optional aft cabin has a direct view of the transom.

Exceptional behavior

After this visit, we're finally going to take the helm of this large 14 m open boat powered by almost 900 hp (3 x 300 bhp). After passing the jetty at the Vieux Port in Cannes, we immediately hit the throttle to reach the islands of Leyrins. Instantly lifting off, we reached a top speed of 49 knots at an engine speed of 5,700 rpm.

Confirming Axopar's adage that performance is more important than fittings, the handling of our 45 Cross Top is exemplary. Very easy to pilot, the hull is responsive and playful, and handles the sea very well. In tight bends at 30 knots, she doesn't stall, and will fully satisfy pilots eager for a thrill.

At cruising speed, the Axopar 45 Cross Top stabilizes at 30 knots at 4,000 rpm. This fast cruising speed gives it a range of 260 miles, thanks to its two 1290-liter fuel tanks.

Positioned pricing

Axopar's largest model takes up the criteria that have established the Finnish shipyard's success. With its emphasis on performance and driving pleasure, it has plenty of arguments for the pleasures of anchoring and coastal cruising. The basic version is available for ?520,000 ex VAT, with three 300 hp Mercury engines. The Axopar 45 Cross Top is priced to match the products of other Nordic boat builders in the same segment, but without options.
