Web series / Nomad Citizen Sailing: how to be energy self-sufficient while cruising?

Nomad Citizen Sailing is enjoying the charms of the Caribbean and its many islands. In Antigua, they are enjoying an idyllic anchorage on Green Island, a small uninhabited island on the east coast of the main island. On site for several days, they explain in this video how they are self-sufficient in energy and water.

On a long trip, we spend more time at anchor than sailing. This is the case for Nomad Citizen Sailing, which is enjoying the charms of the Caribbean islands. For several days, they have been enjoying the sumptuous anchorage of Green Island, east of Antigua. An uninhabited island that forces them to live independently on their sailboat, an Oceanis Clipper 311.

on board, their nomadic house is equipped like a house, especially the kitchen: kettle, mixer, blender, electric plate and even vacuum cleaner! They also have many electronic devices that they need to recharge; GoPro, camera, computers All on a 220V outlet.

A boat equipped with electrics

But how to power all these equipments, especially when one favors nights at anchor rather than at the carrier? Their sailboat is equipped with solar panels, 3 blocks of 400 watts, so a total of 1200 watts installed on a custom-made gantry in Portugal. In addition, they have 8 batteries of 100 Ah each, installed in a box under a seat. Thanks to their charger/converter, they have enough electricity for the electrical equipment. For the kitchen, if they have gas, they rarely use it, preferring the small electric plate.

This solar solution is very practical at anchor, but less so when sailing. During the transatlantic race, the sails tended to shade the solar panels a lot, which captured less solar energy.

For water, they have chosen a watermaker that allows them to have water constantly. And for supplies, they take advantage of the services of a boat deliveryman who supplies them with fresh fruits and vegetables regularly. A common service in the Caribbean.
