Stopover in Concarneau : our sailboat almost drowns in fresh water !

On a sailing trip, there are many good moments, postcard landscapes, and simply happiness. But there are also a lot of problems that we can't imagine. Arthur's trip to the tip of Finistère is punctuated by these moments that we could do without, like when the pump of the fresh water system starts to leak.

During the refurbishment of the boat, we changed many parts, but there are still some original ones. In particular the fresh water pump. We had hesitated to replace it because of the scary noise it made. But to save money, since it was still working, we kept it.

Tragic end of the pump

One morning, quietly at anchor in the Glénan archipelago, a suspicious noise alerted us while we were filling a water bottle. We hear a splash each time the pump is activated, in addition to its usual noise.

Guillaume opens the access to the plumbing and almost gets a jet of water in his eye! The pump leaks everything it can and tries to drown the hold, and the boat, with our 600 liters reserve. In short, we have to cut the circuit until we have repaired.

Unfortunately, without a pump for the fresh water system, we are a bit rationed. It supplies the sink for rinsing dishes, the Doulton filter for drinking water or the kitchen, the washing machine and the shower.

As a precaution, we still have a stock of mineral water, two 5-liter jerry cans at our disposal and a 20-liter can of fresh water stored in the hold. It's time to take it out. If necessary, we can, of course, open the hatches of our tanks and draw directly from them.

Direction Concarneau

The Glénan islands not being the best place to run out of pump, we decided to go to the bay of La Forêt and to Concarneau to buy a new one. No sooner said than done. We stayed several days in the bay, either at anchor in front of the town, or on the side of Beg Meil, the time to buy the material and to change the pump.

We also took the opportunity to visit the Marinarium of Concarneau with the children, to see friends, to walk a little and to enjoy the splendid beaches of the bay. The stopover is worth it! Our water worries seem to be behind us thanks to our captain, a plumber in spite of himself.

Reassured that we would not end up drowned in our own fresh water reserves, we set off in the early morning towards the island of Sein.
