Windmorbihan, real time wind measurements to navigate in the Morbihan

The Windmorbihan website is aimed at all water sports enthusiasts: yachtsmen, kitesurfers, windsurfers and professionals. Thanks to 10 sensors located in strategic places, it gives information in real time. New for 2021, 4-day forecasts, to help you prepare your sailing.

Real time wind measurements in the whole Morbihan region

Launched in 2014, the Windmorbihan website gives real-time wind measurements in the Morbihan region, thanks to 10 quality sensors, installed in particular on lighthouses, such as the Teignouse or Grands Cardinaux. The latest are the island of Arz, in the spring, central point of the Gulf of Morbihan and the island of Groix in June 2021.

Initiated by the Compagnie des Ports du Morbihan and the École Nationale de Voile et des Sports Nautiques (ENVSN), the site is totally free and also accessible from cell phones. The Direction Interrégionale de la Mer and Centrale Nantes have come to reinforce this collaboration.

"Our sensors are not on a beach, on a sailing school mast or a harbor master's office as it can be the case. We have a partnership with the Lighthouses and Beacons to position some sensors on lighthouses. We stand out by the quality and the locations of our sensors" explains Dominique Herriset, from the Compagnie des Ports du Morbihan.

Thanks to this real-time information, sailors can better prepare their sailing and anticipate weather changes. The 13 webcams also allow users to consult the various water bodies in real time. Proof of the site's success, in 2020, more than one million visitors consulted Windmorbihan's forecasts.

New in 2021, 4-day forecast

For 2021, the site is enriched with a new website including wind and tide forecasts for 4 days, using the Arome model of Metéo France. All this information - real time and forecast - is now accessible via the same interface. New background maps also provide a better understanding and anticipation of weather conditions.

Continue to grow

The next sensor will be installed in September on Dumet Island, off the coast of Piriac sur mer, at the mouth of the Vilaine River, co-financed by the Loire Atlantique region, which is very interested in the device. It is the will of all the actors to continue to develop the site according to two axes, the territorial development with new sensors and the enrichment of the web site with new functionalities (wave forecasts...).
