Learn to read the wind on a windsock

A windsock looks very simple: a fabric cone into which the wind rushes. Yet its construction leaves nothing to chance and the machine is capable of determining the strength and direction of the wind.

A windsock allows you to read the wind:

  • in force
  • in the direction of

Its elongated shape makes it possible to visualize the wind direction. The air bag is oriented in the wind bed. It is found in airports, in particular, to indicate to pilots the direction of the wind on the ground.

The body of an air bag is divided into 5 coloured rings, successively orange and white. It is not by chance, each ring represents 5 knots of wind. Thus a windsock is able to indicate the wind between 0 and 25 knots.

So much for the theory, because in practice, things are less clear-cut than that, and only a good anemometer can tell you about the true wind strength.
