Portrait of a building site / Dragonfly, the fast cruise on three hulls in Scandinavian style

The Danish shipyard Quorning Boats is today the reference in the field of trimaran cruising. By specializing in this niche market, the Dragonfly manufacturer has established itself as the must have for fast cruising.

A pioneering Danish shipyard

Quorning Boats, based in Skærbækvej, in the heart of Denmark, was established in 1967. Its founder, Børge Quorning, is a naval architect and regatta sailor well known in the Scandinavian nautical industry. Wishing to break the codes that he considers too conventional, his shipyard produces all kinds of boats: sailboats but also motor dayboats, small fishings or trawlers.

It wasn't until 1981 that the Danish shipyard specialized in sailing trimarans, releasing its first Dragonfly, the 25 MK1. By focusing on the production and design of trimarans, Børge Quorning was able to develop a market for easy, fast and fun cruising multihulls.

Fast cruising, without the inconvenience

The first Dragonfly models met with a large following, eager for fast cruising in the Baltic Sea. Capable of double-digit average speeds, these trimarans are very attractive and offer similar living space to monohulls of the same length. But their main drawback, and not the least, is the space they take up in port. With such a large size, berths are rare and the choice of anchorages is limited. Aware of this problem, Børge Quorning developed in 1988 a revolutionary system designed to fold the linking arms in the port, in order to reduce the space required.

This maneuver is done in a few minutes, from the cockpit and no tools are required. The first model to be equipped with the Swing Wing System was the Dragonfly 800, of which more than 140 were produced. Since then, all the models produced by the shipyard are equipped with it.

A very high level of finish

Built in sandwich with high density Divinycell PVC foam offering an excellent weight/volume ratio, the hulls are made in contact. Except for the engine and some of the fittings, everything is designed and built at the Skærbækvej shipyard. The woodworking shop is a model of its kind and cultivates a know-how that Jens Quorning, Børge's son and manager of the yard since 1995, wants to maintain in his next generations of boats.

The main suppliers of the shipyard are Scandinavian productions, a serious guarantee of quality in the world of boating. This requirement certainly has a cost for the final customer, but the shipyard is keen to maintain this high level of quality.

A short range in which each customer can find himself

Today, Quorning Boats offers four models in its catalog, from 25 to 40 feet. Note that the 25 and 28 feet are adapted to the road gauge and can therefore be towed behind a passenger vehicle. These are intended for a coastal cruising program.

The 32 and 40 footers are intended for an offshore cruising program. The Danish shipyard employs around 30 people, for an annual production of around 50 units. Each model is produced on demand, in order to meet the specifications of each client.
