Frauscher presents its first electrically powered catamaran

In the logic of continuing the shift to electric propulsion, taken a few years ago, the Austrian shipyard Frauscher is launching a new silent model, but especially, on two hulls.

The genesis of the project, the future of electric propulsion

The Austrian shipyard Frauscher is known for its sporty and luxurious launches, available in runabout and center console versions. But for a few years, the manufacturer has invested in the electric propulsion market with 3 models in its range: 610 San Remo, 650 Alassio and 740 Mirage (declined in two deck versions).

To continue its logic, Frauscher is launching the TimeSquare 20, a catamaran measuring 8.30 m long and 2.50 m wide. Bastien Bonnet, French market manager, explains this choice.

"This model is radically different from what we can see when we think of Frauscher in France. But it is in line with the logic developed with the electric boat range a few years ago. Austria strongly regulates the use of motorboats, especially during the summer season. For the past 5 years, the demand for electric propulsion has been growing. We sell about 30 electric boats per year. The idea was to know whether to continue with traditional hulls or to do something different. Performance and autonomy are the sinews of war in electric propulsion. On traditional hulls, the technology is evolving very quickly, but there is still a lot of room for maneuver. In particular, the weight/power ratio for large boats. We decided that the catamaran hull with a motor on each side was the most conclusive for sailing at average speeds over a day."

A 20 m2 platform to enjoy a day on the water

TimeSquare 20 is a catamaran for the day that offers a flexible surface of 20 m2 (as its name indicates) to spend good time on the water with family or friends. Intended for navigation on inland waters or lakes, it offers all the comfort to welcome on board 7 people, in addition to a stability due to its hull shape.

It is powered by two Torqeedo motors (2 to 10 kW), with a battery pack of 7 to 30 kWh for quiet sailing and sufficient autonomy (between 5 and 6 hours at a speed of 6 to 8 knots according to first estimates).

A refrigerator, a sun awning and a high-end audio system are available on board. Finally, the shipyard has worked on materials and finishes, notably by using carbon fiber for aesthetic appeal and weight reduction. The boat weighs in at 1.1 tons. It can be transported on a trailer or left on the pontoon or at anchor, covered with a protective tarp.

"For an Austrian yard like Frauscher, this is really new. It's an innovative product. We're banking on electrics, because it's a market that's becoming more and more important. We are preparing for the next step, concludes Bastien Bonnet.

To be discovered in Cannes in 2021.
