Dictionnaire amoureux de la voile by Loïck Peyron, or how the sailor sees his sailing practice

Take a theme that is dear to you. An actor who knows how to express himself. Mix it all together. You get a love dictionary. A book devoted to a theme without ever going through it all. The sailor Loïck Peyron lent himself to the game for sailing.

The advantage of the love dictionary is that you can make him say anything, whatever the field. Loïc Peyron chose to write about sailing. Thus the sailor goes from a technical explanation (Seamanship) to the portrait of a sailor (Jean Maurel), from the "Journal de bord" to the naval architect currently in vogue, Juan K. Sometimes the chords sound good when for example Isabelle Autisser rubs shoulders with the Adventure item. On other pages, the time and place are completely different.

In the end, this dictionary contains 144 items. Loïck Peyron, who defines himself as a future sailing retiree, has plenty of time to look back on his career as an exceptional sailing racer. He has sailed on many different types of boats, from ocean-going monohulls such as those in the Vendée Globe (he took part in the first edition) to ORMA multihulls or even those in the America's Cup.

Sailing, this entertainer in love with beautiful words indicates that he has not yet fully got around to it, that he still has on his drawing board the incomplete project of the ideal boat for cruising. A kind of hybrid sail and motor that would be the least impacting to sail around the planet. This is all that we find in this book: portraits, presentations, ideas, but also some comments on a current way of sailing that no longer gives the (often wealthy) sailors the space to have fun with their toys that have become too technological. As often the position of Loïck Peyron is clear-cut, lively and striking. Too bad for those who stay on the ground..

This collection of Dictionnaire Amoureux, created in 2000 by Plon, who by its form is in no way encyclopedic and above all totally subjective, finds with the Dictionnaire Amoureux de la Voile written by Loïck Peyron a perfect illustration. We enjoy jumping from cock to donkey, from a multihull to a peppery stopover. Thank you, Mr. Peyron, for these often jubilant gaps that bring us back to 50 years of sailing, pleasure boating and beautiful boats.
