Test / The Northman 1200, a comfortable and economical trawler

The Northman 1200 with its displacement hull, its neat interior layout with 3 cabins and its large outside spaces makes it possible to enjoy a long distance cruise. Discover in video , the test of the largest model of motorboat of the eponymous shipyard.

The Northman 1200 is built by the shipyard of the same name, which also builds the Maxus yachts. A launch of this size is a first for this builder who is more used to smaller boats (up to 8.50 m).

A transformed trial, a success

When you say trawler, you say hull has displacement. We are not talking here about déjaugeage, but about a regular cruising speed that can be maintained, whatever the sea state. In other words, this boat does not type jamais?! And the comfort of life on board is affected.

Stabilized by a keel running under the boat, the Northman keeps its course without difficulty. This keel also offers the advantage of protecting the propeller.

The Northman's silhouette is certainly modern with its straight bow. In this version without a flybridge, the helm station on the deckhouse is avoided, even though there is a sunbathing area above the wheelhouse. Note also the huge aft sundeck. A very pleasant space to access the water at anchor and which enlarges the cockpit all the more.

A moderate cruising speed

Cruising speed is 8 knots. Powerful engines make it possible to exceed it. So with the maximum engine, you can reach 13.5 knots... if you don't look at the fuel consumption.

But it is at 8 knots that the boat is pleasant. Life on board is quiet with little noise from the engine, and even less from the pounding sea.

This speed is achieved with the small engine (110 hp), but a 150 hp engine is better suited, as it offers more torque, which is much more appreciable when manoeuvring.

On the consumption side, it is around 9 l/h on a single engine at 8 knots.

A well thought-out layout and easy circulation

The circulation on board has been well thought out with very wide gangways, secured by rigid tracks. An amusing detail, the Northman 1200's silhouette is asymmetrical. A ladder on the port side gives access to the sunbathing area on the deckhouse.

At the bow a bench seat will be well appreciated for "aperitif/sunset at anchor". The anchorage is well dimensioned with a delphiniere which prevents the anchor from hitting the right bow.

The Northman 1200's hull is actually 10.50 m long, but with the stern platform and delphinere (standard accessories), it measures 12.20 m overall.

The cockpit, protected from the sun (or rain) by the extension of the deckhouse cap, provides level access to the cabin. The rear opening, to the right of the sliding door, creates a bar with direct access to the galley.

The helmsman seated at the steering station can quickly exit the boat on deck through a door on the starboard side gangway. Visibility is very good and there is enough room to install all the electronic instruments. An electrically opening deck hatch, in addition to the side door, ensures perfect ventilation during navigation.

The shipyard has put a lot of effort into the finishing touches: light wood, inlays, quality upholstery... Nothing is missing to go on a cruise. As an option, the heating or the blinds to close the windows complete this already very rich equipment.

Traffic on board is in the centre. Access to the cabins is via three steps. In the middle of the owner's cabin there is a large bed accessible from each side. Hairdresser, reading light and numerous stowage spaces are provided.

The guest cabins are symmetrical to port and starboard. They will be perfect to welcome children for example or a couple of friends. The berth is 1.60 m from large?!

A toilet arranged on the port side completes this interior.
