Test / Construction of the Aquila 44, a new power cat for Europe .

We tried the new Aquila 44 off the coast of La Grande Motte. An opportunity to understand how this newcomer to the European market intends to take market share from established manufacturers. Dream Yacht Charter, the leading charter company, has ordered many of them

Born in the USA, made in China

The brand was born in 2012 from the merger of the leader in engine rental in the United States "Marine Max" and the Chinese composite giant "Sino Eagle". It has established itself by specialising in the power catamaran segment. The range, developed from 32 to 48 feet, fills the American rental bases and to quote only him, the 44' which interests us here was produced in more than 85 specimens, in 3 and 4 cabins, a majority of which was sponsored by the federal rental company.

Somewhat like Moorings with leopards, the models were renamed after the charter operator's name. The Aquila 48 became the Marine Max 484, we know the gait. This range of catamarans, designed to be only motor boats, was born from the double specifications of charter and private use in order to make them as functional as possible in all situations

A demanding customer test

Essai Aquila 44

As the world's largest powerboat customer, the North American boater is a reliable enough test to learn from. The result is noticeable in some details: the rear skirts are wide and very close to the water. The chests under the seats can be equipped with a refrigerated fish box. Details that users on holiday are looking for

A yacht engine design

The general lines are more curved than its predecessors, the prows are fitted with a rather narrow wave piercing bulb and the sterns with a skeg in front of the propellers, a companionway giving access to the foredeck from the front of the flybridge, and a very ergonomic aft cockpit equipped with a modular bar on the aft bulkhead. No doubt, the design had to be the subject of a fine study on propeller propulsion and on life attitudes in use.

Quality manufacturing

The hull, gondola and deck construction is made of a composite of fibreglass, Balsa and vinylester resin under the infusion process for high strength and rigidity. Security has not been forgotten either. Hull bulbs are separately moulded parts that are subsequently attached to the bridles and fore and aft crash boxes are installed forward of watertight bulkheads. The hulls from J&J Design have been tested in the hull tank and we will see how effective they are on the water.
