In 2016, Norbert Fradin, a passionate collector of the sea, decided to create a museum of the sea in Bordeaux. After three years of work, the Marine Sea Museum opened its doors on Friday 21 June 2019.

Permanent collection

Following the inscription of the Port de la Lune on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007, Norbert Fradin had the idea of creating a museum of the sea in Bordeaux. The Bordeaux Marine Museum obtained its building permit in June 2016 and officially opened its doors on Friday, June 21, 2019, the summer day.

This 45 m high building of 13?000 m2, located within the flood basins, houses 10?000 marine objects and works of art. Among the collections are models, paintings, sculptures, books, navigational instruments, maps and life-size boats.

The exhibition is divided into two parts:

The Navy on the first two levels where the history of navigation is presented and explained, with a particular focus on Bordeaux and its region. You can discover the different navigation techniques used for thousands of years as well as the great scientific expeditions and naval battles that have changed the course of history.

The sea that has always attracted, fascinated or worried mankind. We learn about man's relationship with the ocean, sometimes trying to conquer it, sometimes trying to preserve it. Here, we are no longer talking about history, but about oceanographic exploration, through the richness of marine ecosystems, but also about preservation.
