Steeler Flyday, the flybridge star on two bridges

The Steeler FD55 S "Flyday"

The Dutch shipyard Steeler Yachts, known for its splendid aluminium boats, is about to turn the nautical world upside down. He has just revealed the 3D images of his next star FD55 S, a 16.50 m long motor yacht on flybridge. So far, nothing exceptional, except that this model has only two bridges: inside and outside.

A flybridge launch on two decks

The FD55S Flyday is the new model in Steeler Yachts' Performance range. This unique boat is a mix of genres. It has a pure sports star look, a large flybridge and a spacious living space. But its particularity is that, like the flybridges we know, the FD55 S has only two decks.

This new patented model, 16.80 m long and 4.70 m wide, has the patented S-shaped hull of the Performance range, with its flared bow. It is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 40 knots and has a range of 450 miles at cruising speed.

The flybridge space, but not the height

The origin of this novelty was a cruise in the Mediterranean on a flybridge launch in the summer of 2017. While Hans Webbink, founder and CEO of Steeler Yachts, appreciates the feeling of freedom and space offered by this additional bridge, he appreciates the height less.

"Why do flybridges always need three bridges, especially now that glass can be part of the bridge structure inférieur?? Together with our team of designers, we have designed a new flybridge concept that combines the traditional main and lower decks into a single floor. If there is one boat design in which there is no compromise, it is the Flyday" explains Hans Webbink.

Like a dayboat, the Flyday has several exterior areas on board: the foredeck, the cockpit open to the stern with its swimming platform and four steps higher, the large flybridge. The latter is surrounded by a large reverse windscreen and houses the helm station to starboard.

A custom interior for two to six people

Access to the interior from the cockpit is via inclined sliding glass doors. While the latter allow the light to flow in, their orientation may nevertheless create a kind of oven. Like a sailboat, a four-step descent leads to the living room and its two side sofas. A large lateral glazing runs from rear to front, bathing the main deck with light.

Each model can be customised and the site offers up to three models of accommodation with sleeping facilities for two to six people.

The "Owner" version offers a large living/dining room with a bar/kitchen and an owner's suite with a height of about 2 m, as well as a bathroom with separate toilet and dressing room. The "Family" version includes an additional double cabin with toilet and the "Family & Friends" version has a simple kitchenette instead of the complete kitchen, to free up space for a third cabin.

Innovations and options

Known for the quality of construction and finishing of its boats, Steeler Yachts designed the Flyday with the same rigour. Thus, the flybridge has a hydraulic bimini system that protects the space from the sun or closes it completely in case of bad weather.

Regarding propulsion, the FD55 S receives two Volvo Penta IPS800 engines. The yard also offers several options such as Volvo Penta's dynamic positioning system, air conditioning, an alternative to the bimini in the form of an aluminium T-Top that folds hydraulically onto the windscreen.

Construction of this first model will begin in May and the site hopes to quickly find an owner who will take part in this ambitious project.
