The Hawksley Classic shipyard has just entered the boating market, with its first all-wood - and please handmade - Star 18. This small 18-foot wooden canoe is inspired by the Rivas of the 1960s to combine speed and elegance.

Professional reconversion for passionate work

Star 18 is an 18-foot wooden canoe made of wood and handcrafted in Dorset, England. These designers Simon Hawksley and Laure Mora - husband and wife in the city - became fond of wooden boats and decided to make it their profession. These former engineers have undergone a professional reconversion to make a living from their passion: a cabinet making training for Laura and a traditional shipbuilding training for Simon.

A handmade but modern boat

They launched their brand last year in England and designed their first model, Star 18. Entirely designed and built by the couple - without 3D modeling -, this pretty boat finds its inspiration from US canoes, whose design will then be taken up by Riva in the 60s "Simon was inspired by the design of American boats in the 1960s, with a very rounded transom. A look that was discovered in the 1930s on a US racing boat in the 1930s, and which was then taken over by the Italians, particularly Riva" laure explains.

This 18-foot boat is handcrafted from wood, but with modern materials such as epoxy. "There are 3 layers of plywood that are hand-made and cover the wood. The teak is made of plywood and the light epoxy is used to harden and seal the whole thing. In total, there are 10 coats of varnish" explains Laure.

Comfort and speed on board

RCD (EU Recreational Craft Directive) approved in England, it can accommodate up to 5 people on board (4 plus a pilot) in category C in France. A shallow draught - 0.6 m - allows it to navigate coves and anchor easily near beaches. Its Volvo Penta V6 240 HP inboard propulsion ensures a maximum speed of 41 knots.

In addition to the large bench that promises comfort, there are many storage spaces on board, behind the backs, as well as a waterproof compartment under the bench. The pilot seat swivels to the rear, to enjoy a moment at anchor, but also from front to back. And finally, its transportable gauge - 5.6 m long and 2.2 m wide - makes it easy to transport and launch.
