Special Edition / Mercury 15-20 EFI, the softness of electronic injection

By renewing the small powers of its engine range, Mercury does much more than just give a simple pencil stroke on the design of a hood. The new engine, available in 15 and 20 hp, is a real novelty, loaded with small revolutions. Discovered during a test run.

How to judge the progress of a new model compared to an old one? Simply by allowing you to try the old one alongside the new one. This is what Mercury offered us by providing us with the Mercury 20 hp carburettor engine (the old model) versus the new one with fuel injection (EFI). These two engines were mounted on an AluRib semi-rigid (with an aluminium hull) of 3.20 m.

Like the previous model, this 4-stroke, twin-cylinder engine is available in 2 power ratings: 15 and 20 hp. It has a new hood that incorporates the angular design found on the new V6 and V8 models recently introduced by Mercury. The big innovation is the fuel supply, which is now provided by an injection bar (and not by carburetor) without requiring a battery. Indeed, this engine starts by hand with a launcher (the electric starter option is available). An electrical trim (for remote control versions) can also be installed.

Minus 5 kg on the scale

The new Four Stroke EFI engine weighs 5 kilos less than its predecessor (45 kg). This is very important for the use made of these powers, which often have the function of a tender engine, or are installed on small boats that are often taken out of the water.

A central control bar

Mercury installs the tiller in the center of the engine. As well as being right-handed or left-handed, the bar will always be well positioned, regardless of the pilot's position. In addition, the throttle handle can be rotated in either direction (simply reverse the cables). Everyone will be free to configure their engine as they like. Finally, the shuttle handle is installed just next to the throttle handle. Its use is instinctive: forward, the handle is forward..

A very different behaviour

The possibility of trying both engines on the same boat is very telling. Indeed, at acceleration, the behaviour of the two engines is not at all identical. The carburettor engine accelerates violently, the power comes all of a sudden. This behaviour changes with the injection: the acceleration is smooth, without jolt or vibration. This makes the engine much easier to control, less risky to use.
