Henri Lloyd, understand the technical differences between the clothing ranges

Why do seawear manufacturers offer several ranges to their users? Shouldn't a jacket or overalls just protect the sailor? To see more clearly and understand the positioning of the ranges, we asked Florian Le Duigou, head of the Henri Lloyd brand for France.

How to choose a good jacket for sailing?

First of all, users must understand that the best jacket or dungarees are useless if you don't practice the 3-layer technique!

The principle of the 3 layers is simple. This involves draining the moisture produced by the body outwards (perspiration) and preventing moisture from entering the body (spray or rain). For this purpose, we remove all cotton or wool clothing that absorbs moisture. On the other hand, modern materials (polyester) are used which always leave the body dry.

The first layer that must be in direct contact with the skin to keep it always dry. The second layer is there to keep the body warm. This is the role of the polar fleeces, whose curls enclose air (air remains the best insulator from cold) while evacuating moisture to the outside. This is the role of the jacket and dungarees that protect against external aggression.

Why do manufacturers offer several ranges of jackets?

For a sailor, the choice of a oilskin and overalls is made according to two main selection criteria:

  • The budget
  • The display is supported by the computing power of the device and the graphic resolution capability. Axiom devices are responsive, making use of them pleasant. The contextual menus that appear on the screen and move at will are there to facilitate the customization of the device.

Henry Lloyd has 3 distinct ranges that address 3 types of users and 3 different budgets:

  • Elite, the most efficient and expensive range.
  • Shadow, the ideal range for regular users
  • Freedom, the range designed for occasional users

In these 3 ranges the assembly work (assembly) is identical on all models. Making overalls for one of the three ranges requires the same labour. The difference in price is explained by the technical choices, materials used, coating or membrane, more reinforcements... All our garments are efficient whatever the level of use, but some will wear faster than others. Hence the importance of choosing clothing according to its use. There is no need to take a jacket strong enough to support a round the world trip if you only sail in the Mediterranean two weeks a year in summer..

Why draw different models according to the ranges?

Depending on the use, users do not have the same needs. It is funny, for example, to note that beginners start by putting on a jacket before putting on their overalls when the weather gets worse. On the other hand, a seasoned sailor will put on his overalls quickly and will only put on the jacket much later. It often has underlays (fleece, softshell) that protect it well, before it needs a jacket.

In addition, a first user likes to have many pockets. This is not the case for a sailor who knows that these bags will get wet quickly and will not be usable. Same for the collar: the first price jackets have a lined fleece collar. It's comfortable when you try it in store, it's much less comfortable when the fleece is impregnated with water..

Similarly, with the membranes that provide waterproofing against wind and spray, jackets are becoming lighter and lighter. There is only one layer of thin enough fabric left, without lining. Anyone who has never tried this type of jacket before may not feel protected. As a result, the models in the first ranges are equipped with a lining that gives a feeling of warmth, but also weight to the jacket.
