Armel le Cléac'h, IMOCA world champion

Victory for Armel le Cléac'h in the 2016 Vendée Globe

After his victory in the 2016 Vendée Globe, Armel le Cléac'h has just won the IMOCA world champion title, for the 2015-2016 cycle, which moreover ended with the single-handed round the world race. This is the second time he has won this award, as he had already won it in 2008. He thus succeeds Jean Le Cam and turns the page on the IMOCA circuit in the best possible way

The Vendée Globe was his last victory on the IMOCA circuit, but also the one that earned him the IMOCA World Champion title. A title he won for the 2 e times, after his first award in 2008.

"I am happy with this second World Championship title which rewards a certain consistency in the results and is a great recognition. I share this reward with my whole team who worked hard to get here. We set up a method that consisted of never putting ourselves in the red to achieve an objective: to do a great Vendée Globe and win. The story of Banque Populaire's IMOCA project began in 2011 and we have worked well over the years, with two superb boats, one of which we built. We made our mark with a second place finish and then a victory in the Vendée Globe. This World Champion title is a great way to leave the IMOCA circuit before setting off on new projects in Ultime, where we'll be trying to do as well" indicates Armel the Cleac'h.

With a total of 351 points, the Banque Populaire skipper has a 20 point lead over the British sailor Alex Thomson (331 points), who pushed him to the limit during the Vendée Globe. Two points behind him is Jeremie Beyou (329 points).

How is the IMOCA World Championship going?

The IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championship takes place over two seasons. In 2015/2016 - it totalled 5 races, worth a whole coefficient of different points, with the Vendée Globe in the championship final. The skipper with the most points in these races (without taking part in all of them) then wins the famous title.

To obtain the number of points, it is then sufficient to calculate its ranking according to the coefficient of the race. For example, out of 10 starters, the 1 er arrived totals the coefficient of the stroke x10, the 2 e x9, on the 3rd e x8?
