REV, the world's largest superyacht to help the oceans

The REV, Research Expedition Vessel

The Norwegian businessman Kjell Inge Røkke - and one of Norway's biggest fortunes - has just launched the construction of an expedition and research vessel, the REV (Research Expedition Vessel). The 181.6 m long vessel designed by Espen Oeino is being built at the Vard shipyard in Norway and will be delivered in the summer of 2020.

"The oceans cover 70% of our planet. They provide a basis of existence for the world's 7.3 billion people, both as a source of food, but also for employment, value creation and social development. According to researchers, 90% of marine areas have not yet been studied and offer countless opportunities. However, the oceans are more suffocated than ever by overfishing, coastal pollution s, habitat destruction, climate change and ocean acidification. But above all by one of the most urgent challenges of all, the plastification of the ocean. There is an urgent need for knowledge and solutions." explains the businessman on the site of his project.

Man grew up in Molde, Norway and has always been fascinated by marine and underwater life. He decided to start building an oceanic research and expedition ship, an idea he has had for several years. A crowning achievement for someone who has made his fortune in the oil industry... He has formed a partnership with WWF Norway for the construction of his yacht, designed by the designer Espen Oeino.

This ship will be a platform to learn and understand how to save the oceans. This private vessel will be made available by Kjell Inge Røkke for scientists, marine experts, environmentalists and explorers from all over the world. But also for charter to wealthy yachtsmen and for private use by its owner. It will be able to accommodate up to 90 passengers, including crew and scientific team.

State-of-the-art equipment for the study of underwater life

The vessel will be equipped for research and study of the entire marine ecosystem. An independent scientific committee will evaluate and recommend research projects to be pursued and will ensure the highest level of scientific standards and quality of research. The vessel will be equipped with high-tech equipment to monitor and analyse marine areas, currents, the seabed, fish, animals and plant life in all the world's oceans.

It will also have state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for analytical work, as well as an auditorium for conferences and debates.

The ship has the autonomy and equipment to make autonomous expeditions around the world, to explore, document and collect. With a range of 21,120 nautical miles, it can cover almost 100% of the circumference of the earth at the Equator.

An innovative system for plastic recycling

The REV will be equipped with a high-tech incinerator system to burn the recovered plastic (up to 5 tonnes per day) without producing environmentally harmful gases. Each kilogram of plastic burned will release 110 kW of thermal power in the form of hot water, which can be reused for the ship.
