Bringing together a number of multi-sector players
Capable of reaching speeds of up to 30 knots, The Icon is the fruit of collaboration between several multi-sector players, under the direction of BMW teams. Design was entrusted to the Designworks innovation center, a subsidiary of the BMW Group with studios in Los Angeles, Munich and Shanghai. The development and realization of the concept was entrusted to boat builder Tyde. Finally, the electric propulsion system draws its energy from high-voltage batteries supplied by BMW i.

BMW electric motors combined with foils
The Icon is powered by two 100 kW electric motors, combined with six 240 kWh batteries from the BMW i3. With this configuration, the boat has a range of 50 miles and a cruising speed of 24 knots.
To increase range, comfort and speed, The Icon features foils that reduce energy requirements by up to 80% compared with a conventional hull.
To complete the maritime experience, the boat is equipped with a Dolby Atmos audio system. To create the music, BMW turned to two-time Academy Award-winning Hollywood film composer Hans Zimmer.

A unique design concept
The design team had to translate this unique concept into an impactful design on the outside, while working on the view from the inside. The superstructure, which rests on a very flat shell, is based on a central support that ensures the transparency of the architecture. The basic silhouette, with its prismatic shape, offers a width of 4.5 m in the aft section. This creates a spacious entrance to the luxurious saloon. The hull is distinguished by its light origami-like structure. As foil technology ensures smoother sailing, the designers have replaced conventional side sections with large glass surfaces. Passengers benefit from panoramic views as they fly over the water. LED lighting strips on the bow and stern, as well as on the cargo areas, contribute to the distinctive look.

Angled glass doors open onto a carpeted interior, with artistically designed furniture evoking a kaleidoscope. Each room is made up of sections of sheet metal, whose grainy surface structure reflects sunlight onto the floor. The 360° rotating seats are at the heart of a user-centered experience for social interaction, say the designers.

A BMW control station
The boat's control station is located in the center of the vessel, with a wheel-shaped steering wheel and BMW-designed instruments. In place of traditional nautical electronics is a new interpretation of the BMW interface, bringing together all the important functions in a digital control unit. This is a 32-inch touchscreen with 6k resolution and the look and feel of the BMW iDrive control system. Combined with the BMW 8 operating system, it opens up a new dimension in information visualization and digital interaction. Key functions such as range information and weather reports can be controlled using voice commands.

Personal or commercial use
Ready to go into production, The Icon is based on a platform offering great adaptability to individual needs. It is geared to modern, urban lifestyles, and can be used as a means of marine transport by both private customers in search of luxury, and in the commercial sector. BMW's aim is to accelerate emission-free luxury mobility.
