Jules Verne Trophy sprayed for Francis Joyon on Idec Sport!

Idec Sport, new winner of the Jules Verne Trophy

Idec Sport has just crossed the finish line this Thursday, January 26, 2017 at 8 h 49 min after 40 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 30 seconds. Francis Joyon and his five crew have thus won the Jules Verne Trophy Record, nearly 5 days ahead of the previous reference time, held by Loïck Peyron on the Banque Populaire trimaran.

The start had not been a restful one, since after a first start on 20th November - which proved unsuccessful - the Idec Sport crew set sail again on 16th December 2016. On Idec Sport, a red trimaran of 31.50 m, Francis Joyon had gathered a crew of 5 sailors: Clément Surtel, Gwénolé Gahinet, Bernard Stamm, Sébastien Audigane and Alex Pella.

Accumulating a lot of ground on the reference time set by Loïck Peyron, the title holder since 2012, the club of 6 has managed to make up the miles, even setting a double record at Cape Leeuwin. The maxi-trimaran Idec Sport has just passed the longitude of Cape Leeuwin, a lead of nearly 16 hours and 57 minutes over the reference time of Loïck Peyron on Banque Populaire V. They are also taking advantage of this to set a second record: the Indian Ocean record between the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Leeuwin in 4 days, 09 hours and 37 minutes.

Once again on 12th January this year, Idec Sport rounded Cape Horn, the last of the three markers of its round the world race, with 4 days 06 hours and 35 minutes ahead of the reference time set by Banque Populaire V in 2012.

It has to be said that the trimaran has been racking up some crazy speeds, such as this 14th day at sea at 894 miles covered at an average of 37.3 knots, these 8 days at over 800 miles, and 7 at over 700 and has set no less than 6 records or intermediate passage times, in Leeuwin, Tasmania, Antimeridian, Horn, Ecuador and Ushant.
