Hanse launches an ultra-maneuverable electric sailboat

With its new E-Motion Rudder, Hanse is launching an innovative all-electric sailing boat. Thanks to its new propeller, maneuverability, lightness and silence are the key features.

A fully integrated solution

The new Hanse 315 E-Motion Rudder offers an electric drive fully integrated into the yacht. Instead of a propeller on a sail drive, shaft line or outboard, it is directly attached with its 4 kW electric motor to the rudder blade. This is powered by lithium-ion batteries installed in the boat.

The controls are identical to a Torqeedo outboard.

Optimal maneuverability

From experience, all boaters know that an outboard allows optimal maneuverability by directly directing the flow of the propeller. However, it is more difficult to integrate on a large sailboat and not very graceful on the transom. On the other hand, a boat with a shaft line can be difficult to control when manoeuvring, if the propeller is not in line with the rudder. The rudder then struggles to deflect the water flow. This is especially true when going astern or with a twin-screw.

With the E-Motion Rudder, Hanse offers the maneuverability of an outboard for a medium-sized cruiser. With a rudder angle of 100 degrees, the yacht can turn on the spot and maneuver serenely in strong winds.

Weight gain

By saving the sail-drive and the internal combustion engine, the E-Motion Rudder system saves 100 kg. The integration of the motor and its folding propeller on the rudder reduces drag, although it will probably affect the steering feel of the purist sailor.

A good autonomy

the 100% electric E Motion Rudder has a range of 30 miles at 4.5 knots and a top speed of 6.1 knots. Recharging the batteries at the dock takes 3 hours.

The boat will be presented at the Hamburg boat show at the end of October. We look forward to seeing it on the market.
