The life of Newfoundland fishermen in comics

"Between land and sea", a comic book in 3 volumes which tells with precision the life on the terre-neuvas in 1920 and the wait of the women who stayed on land.

Editions du soleil has just released the latest opus of the comic book "Entre terre & mer". This story in three volumes describes the discovery of the sea by a landlubber. For the love of a woman, to prove to her that he is capable of it, he embarks on a Newfoundland to go fishing for cod during a campaign on the banks off the island of Newfoundland.

We discover the harshness of the living conditions of these sailors at the beginning of the 20th century (the story takes place in 1920), but especially the long wait of the women who stayed on land and had to run the house (a campaign lasts more than eight months).

If the story is not very suspenseful, these three volumes are a pleasure to read, especially for the quality of the drawings (bravo also for the coloring). The "nautical" details are well respected, both for the sail maneuvers and the fishing sessions on the dory. Some sayings and some Breton expressions are also included, which we can use during our navigations.

The scenario is taken from the television series of the same name, broadcast in 1997, directed by Hervé Baslé. This series won 3 awards when it was released, but was not a huge success with the audience. Compared to the movie, the comic book takes some shortcuts, but it renders well the intensity and the promiscuity existing in the huis clos between these crewmen.

With Christmas approaching, here is a great gift idea.
