AC45 gliding flight for Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing

The winning team from the first race of the America's Cup World Series in Portsmouth chose to use video to explain why Sunday's race had been cancelled. Original and somewhat painful

This video was shot during a training session in the Solent (the inlet that separates the Isle of Wight from England). Put online by the Land Rover Ben Ainslie team, it shows the crew on their AC45 in full navigation. While the boat is sailing to windward, the right hull lifted up on its foil, it noses into the sea. As the bow plunges into the water, the helmsman is thrown forward and lands quite violently on the multihull's forward beam. As he tries to climb back up alongside his crew members, the latter react quickly and regain control of the boat's navigation.

"This video was made with a little less wind than on Louis Vuitton ACWS Portsmouth Sunday, but it should give you an idea of what would have happened there if we had sailed there... that's why we didn't go racing on Sunday on the America's Cup World Series in Portsmouth," the video caption reads.
