Off the coast of Les Embiez, a heavily damaged speedboat escaped sinking thanks to the rapid intervention of rescuers at sea. Two passengers were evacuated to hospital, while an emergency plugging operation was carried out in the area. A painful reminder at the dawn of the summer season.

A sailboat and a motorboat collided off Les Embiez on Saturday, May 30. Two people were injured on board the motorboat Eureka 1, which suffered considerable damage. The rapid intervention of the Bandol SNSM limited the ingress of water and brought the boat back to port.

The collision involved the 10.15 m sailing yacht Aromat and the motorboat Eureka 1, a 7.30 m Sun Cruiser. Seven people were on board both craft at the time of the accident. Two passengers on the speedboat were injured.

Two injured evacuated to Toulon

The two injured people were taken care of by the semirigid vehicle of the Gendarmerie Maritime's Coastal Surveillance Brigade. They were then transferred to a diving support en route to Le Brusc, before being evacuated by the fire department to the Sainte Musse hospital in Toulon. Meanwhile, the Gendarmerie Maritime remained in contact with the Eureka 1, awaiting the arrival of SNSM resources.

A major breach and the risk of shipwreck

The speedboat suffered a large breach in its hull, which was literally ripped open by the sailboat. Rescuers from Bandol's SNSM engaged the Saint Elme II speedboat and the semi-rigid Timothy.

On the spot, the Eureka 1 was boarded by onboard swimmers to stabilize the situation. A tensioned tarpaulin was used to temporarily seal the breach, while a motor-driven dewatering pump limited the ingress of water.

Towing to Bandol and grounding

At 12:45 pm, the Saint Elme II took the Eureka 1 in tow towards the port of Bandol, escorted by the Timothy and the Gendarmerie Maritime's semirig.

At the entrance to the harbor, the Timothy took the launch aft to facilitate the maneuver. At 2:00 pm, the Eureka 1 was rigged and then put ashore in the careening area. The intervention prevented the launch from sinking and the risk of pollution in an area much frequented by pleasure boaters.
