While Sodebo Ultim 3 lengthens her stride in the South Pacific, Guirec Soudée's MACSF Ultim and Alexia Barrier's Idec Sport cross paths. Here's an update on the three round-the-world races currently underway.

Sodebo Ultim 3: steady pace, tight trajectory

With 728 miles covered in 24 hours, Sodebo Ultim 3 is approaching the Horn 540 miles ahead of the 2017 record. The routing team remains cautious, monitoring the wind angle (TWD), which could become unfavorable. The morning's routing suggested keeping to a northeasterly route, in a direct line, without gybing. The strategy therefore seems to be based on continuity, even if it means playing in a refusing wind before rounding Cape Town.

Alexia Barrier and her team aboard Idec Sport have rounded Cape Horn and are now sailing up the South Atlantic. But with a 5,320-mile deficit on the reference track, the Jules Verne record has been out of reach for some time. Progress figures remain respectable âeuros 567 miles covered in 24 hours on the bottom âeuros in moderate conditions, a fine performance despite her mainsail problems.

Single-handed aboard the MACSF Ultim, Guirec Soudée continues his voyage against the wind, in a rarely-attempted version of the round-the-world race.
This morning, he is making headway at 14.4 knots with light winds of 8.6 knots and calm seas (1.4 m). Mild South Atlantic conditions are enabling him to maintain a comfortable pace. Above all, the gap to Jean-Luc Van Den Heede's track is widening: +2,087 nautical miles ahead of the record at this stage.

Even if the hardest part is yet to come, with the South Seas to climb and the slow progress against the prevailing winds, the sailor and his trimaran are making good trajectory choices and showing great regularity (441 miles covered on the bottom in 24 hours).
