L'Hermione in receivership: the swan song or the start of a new story?

The emblematic frigate from Rochefort has been placed in receivership by the La Rochelle court. The Hermione-La Fayette Association has four to six months to find a financial solution and secure the ship's future.

A stay of execution granted by the court

On September 18, 2025, the La Rochelle court declared the Hermione-La Fayette association, which manages the replica of the three-masted ship, in receivership. This decision follows a bankruptcy hearing held in early September. The ruling, announced on September 22, gives the association a four-month observation period, which may be extended to six months. An extremely short period, given the human and financial resources required.

A frigate already weakened by technical problems

After facing serious technical difficulties, including a fungus attack that weakened its wooden hull, L'Hermione is now in the throes of a major financial crisis. The costs of maintaining, repairing and operating the ship far exceed the revenue generated by visits and public events.

Management under judicial supervision

The procedure entails the appointment of a mandatary and a court-appointed administrator to examine the accounts and supervise management. September salaries will be covered by AGS (Assurance de garantie des salaires), a scheme designed to provide security for employees when the association no longer has sufficient funds.

Contrasting communications

While the official press release issued by the association insists on the continuity of the "Hermione adventure", the reality is more worrying. Receivership means that the ship is no longer in a position to meet its short-term debts. To avoid liquidation, the association will have to quickly convince its partners, local authorities and sponsors to make a financial commitment.
