AutoTrack for Simrad HALO radars: target tracking and safety out to 24 nautical miles

The AutoTrack function on Simrad's HALO 2000 and HALO 3000 radars promises automated target tracking over 24 nautical miles. With continuous display, it can be integrated into multifunction displays. What remains to be assessed is its practical benefits for pleasure boating.

With the arrival of AutoTrack on Simrad HALO 2000 and HALO 3000 radar systems, navigators now have a tool capable of automatically detecting, classifying and tracking moving targets. Beyond the technical announcement, the interest lies in its integration with radar monitoring, its interaction with multifunction displays and its safety limitations.

Optimize radar monitoring with automated tracking

AutoTrack displays in real time up to 50 targets simultaneously, over a maximum range of 24 nautical miles. This function can be particularly useful in dense traffic areas or during night-time coastal navigation. The display superimposes the position and trajectory of the targets, making it easier to understand the situation. For yachtsmen, this means less manual handling, not to mention the need to maintain an active visual watch in compliance with RIPAM.

Displaying and prioritizing alerts

Even when the radar screen is not displayed, a dynamic widget signals alerts deemed critical. Targets are prioritized, which can reduce distractions. This prioritization is invaluable when sailing alone or with a small crew, but requires an understanding of the system's classification criteria to avoid misinterpretation.

Integration with existing on-board systems

AutoTrack is fully integrated with HALO 2000 and 3000 radars, compatible with Simrad NSS, NSO evo3 and evo3S multifunction displays, as well as NSX, NSX ULTRAWIDE and NSS 4. This compatibility ensures interface continuity, without the need for a dedicated display. Installation is limited to a software update, which facilitates on-board adoption without any major intervention.

Limits and precautions for use

AutoTrack is a navigation aid and does not replace human vigilance. The system is not an approved collision-avoidance device and should be used in conjunction with conventional navigation practices. Navigators must remain attentive to gain settings, sea and weather conditions that may affect radar detection.

Outlook for other radar ranges

Simrad plans to roll out the AutoTrack function on other HALO models, including radomes for the Lowrance and B&G brands.
