VHF DSC and AIS Class B 5 W combined in the em-trak X100

The em-trak X100 VHF combines a Class D DSC radio and a Class B 5 W AIS transponder. This combination is aimed at yachtsmen who wish to centralize communication and AIS transmission/reception in a single piece of equipment. Construction, integration and connectivity: what's behind this VHF?

The em-trak X100 combines a VHF DSC Class D and an AIS Class B 5 W transponder using the SOTDMA protocol in a single unit. This configuration is ideal for sailboat and motorboat owners looking for a single station for VHF watch, DSC calls and AIS position broadcasting.

VHF DSC and AIS 5 W SOTDMA integration

The VHF DSC Class D permanently monitors channel 70 for digital selective calling. It can transmit and receive distress, emergency or safety calls with MMSI identification.

The AIS Class B 5 W transponder operates in SOTDMA, a protocol that reserves transmission slots on AIS channels. With a power of 5 W, higher than that of 2 W CSTDMA models, range depends mainly on antenna height and propagation conditions. On a sailboat fitted with a masthead antenna, the transmission range is typically between 8 and 12 miles.

The centralization of functions reduces the number of boxes on the card table or console, and simplifies the electrical architecture.

Construction and ergonomics adapted to the marine environment

The housing is designed to withstand water splashes and the stresses of a salty environment. The controls are designed for use with wet hands. The color display remains legible in daylight, an important point in open wheelhouses or under a cap.

The handset incorporates an integral PTT cable to limit mechanical failures. Digital audio processing improves communication intelligibility in the presence of wind or engine noise.

Several mounting options are available: flush-mounted, ceiling-mounted or bracket-mounted. This flexibility facilitates installation on narrow consoles or small instrument panels.

WiFi, Bluetooth and mobile app connectivity

The em-trak X100 integrates WiFi and Bluetooth. A dedicated app lets you consult AIS targets, make DSC calls and receive alerts from a smartphone or tablet connected to the onboard network.

The intercom function enables internal communication between crew members equipped with compatible devices. A man overboard alert can be transmitted as a notification with position indication.

These functions complement the main display and can be used as a remote cockpit display, without the need for multiple fixed repeaters.

NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 integration

NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 compatibility enables AIS data to be broadcast to a chartplotter, multifunction display or navigation software. The transponder requires a reliable, continuous GPS position to transmit accurate data. Installation of the VHF antenna and GPS directly conditions the quality of AIS exchanges.

Positioning and target audience

Distributed by Navicom and available at 1,799 ? INCL. VAT the em-trak X100 is positioned in the high-end combined equipment segment. It is aimed at boaters looking for a compact system combining VHF DSC and 5W AIS, with extensive connectivity functions.

This type of device is ideally suited to inshore or semi-offshore cruising vessels, where AIS visibility and ease of installation are key criteria.
