A French sailing treasure
Built in 1978 at the Dufour Aluminium yard, the 12m JI France 3 has left its mark on America's Cup history, notably with its participation in the 1980 and 1983 editions. Armed by Baron Bich, she reached the challenger finals in 1980, the best result ever achieved by a French team. Yves Rousset-Rouard took up the torch in 1981 and re-entered the boat in the 1983 edition. Although eliminated after the third round-robin, France 3 continued to shine as a training partner in subsequent years, before being handed over to the French Navy.
Rebirth thanks to the France 3 âeuros 83 association
In 2018, Yann Labbé, a sailing enthusiast and Finistérian nautical business leader, rescued the yacht from imminent demolition. After a period of storage and reflection, he structured the restoration project with the creation of the France 3 âeuros 83 association in 2022. The objective is clear: to return the France 3 to its former glory and sail it again in its original configuration.
The work planned covers the entire ship, from rigging and electronics to structure and sails. Fortunately, expert reports confirm the excellent condition of the hull, facilitating the restoration process.
An ambitious collective project
The association, which is recognized as being in the public interest, has mobilized former crew members, technicians and enthusiasts. Yves Rousset-Rouard, the yacht's historic owner, is the honorary president, and the presence of Armel Le Cléac'h, three-time winner of the Solitaire du Figaro and sponsor of the project, gives added impetus to the initiative.

To carry out this mission, the association has launched a vast fundraising and membership campaign, open to individuals and companies. This support is crucial to financing the necessary restorations and guaranteeing a successful return to the water.
France 3 returns to the Yacht Club de France
Under the impetus of Yves Rousset-Rouard, the yacht once again became a member of the prestigious Yacht Club de France. This affiliation recalls the France 3's heyday in 12m JI competitions. Eventually, the boat is scheduled to take part in further regattas in the Mediterranean, providing an exceptional showcase for French maritime know-how.
An adventure to share
For Yann Labbé, this restoration project is much more than just a building site. As he points out: " France 3 is 45 years old and still has a lot to tell. Surrounding ourselves with historic figures and talented sailors to bring this sailing monument back to life is a real honor. "
For his part, Armel Le Cléac'h makes no secret of his enthusiasm: " France 3 is part of the great history of French sailing. Restoring her is going to be a wonderful adventure. I can't wait to sail on this emblematic yacht. "
