The America's Cup is not only a sailing challenge, but also a field for technological innovation. In 2024, American Magic is adopting augmented reality to optimize its performance. The team is using ActiveLook, a system developed by French company Microoled, designed to provide sailors with crucial information without distracting their attention from the race.
ActiveLook technology: a tailor-made solution for competitive sailing
Microoled's ActiveLook technology is distinguished by its minimalist approach. Originally designed for endurance sports such as cycling and running, this lightweight augmented reality system has been adapted to the demands of competitive sailing. The challenge for American Magic was to provide key information, such as boat speed or wind direction, while enabling crew members to remain focused on their environment. Unlike conventional display systems, which can clutter up the field of vision, ActiveLook takes the form of a discreet display integrated into helmets.

Optimized training thanks to augmented reality
For the American team, this technology has been more than just an add-on. Used for almost a year in training, ActiveLook has proved to be an invaluable ally. The ability to receive live strategic information has enabled the crew to better anticipate maneuvers, while reducing distractions caused by consulting instruments. On foilers, every second counts, and the ability to maintain focus on the race while accessing essential data was a real asset for American Magic.

Technical challenges of ActiveLook integration
Integrating such technology was not without its challenges. As José Luis-Vela, head of technical development at American Magic, explains, the main challenge was to guarantee optimum visibility while maintaining intact peripheral vision. Microoled engineers therefore worked closely with the sailing team to fine-tune the interface and ensure that the information transmitted was both relevant and non-intrusive. This process, though complex, was completed in just three months, providing an intuitive interface suited to the demanding conditions of regatta sailing.
An impact beyond sailing
The benefits of ActiveLook technology are not limited to competitive sailing. In fact, Microoled plans to deploy this technology in other sectors. Already successfully tested in disciplines such as cycling, the ActiveLook platform has also been integrated into the NMEAremote application, dedicated to sailing crews. This collaboration between American Magic and Microoled paves the way for increased use of augmented reality in various sports and activities requiring maximum concentration and instant access to data.

A hotly contested semi-final
The duel between American Magic and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup 2024 became increasingly intense. After trailing 4-0, American Magic staged a spectacular comeback, closing the gap to 4-3. The last two American victories, acquired following technical failures on the Italian boat, revived the competition. Luna Rossa, whose mainsail was damaged, must now wait for the next race if it is to secure its place in the final against INEOS Britannia. The suspense remains for the next races in Barcelona.
