A conspicuous absence for the next edition

American Magic, historic representative of the New York Yacht Club, will not be on the starting line for the next America's Cup. The team confirmed its withdrawal in a press release published on October 28, 2025. It denounces a framework deemed incompatible with its sporting and financial requirements. " We do not believe that the conditions are ripe for a competitive and economically viable campaign "said Doug DeVos, American Magic senior team.
Disagreement over the new format

The American team is pointing the finger at the event's current structure, negotiated under the new America's Cup Partnership (ACP). Despite discussions with the Defender (Team New Zealand), the Challenger of Record and the other teams, the directors felt that the campaign was untenable. American Magic's refusal to enter comes as the official deadline for submitting bids runs until early January 2026.
A refocused business in Pensacola
Despite this withdrawal, American Magic is maintaining its onshore activities. From its base in Pensacola, Florida, the team will continue to focus on athlete training, technological development and participation in other circuits such as the TP52, where it won a world title in 2025. The Pensacola base is also a hub for U.S. women's, youth and Olympic programs.
Towards the 39th edition?

It remains to be seen whether American Magic will reappear for the 39th America's Cup, or whether its involvement in the America's Cup Partnership masks a longer-term strategy. The 38th edition, expected in Naples, will feature Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa, Athena Racing, and potentially Alinghi Red Bull Racing and Orient Express Team.
