EZraft, a range of ultralight, compact inflatable tenders

EZraft has arrived on the market with a range of lightweight inflatable tenders offering excellent stability. We went to the port of La Grande Motte to find out more.

A technological innovation

Based in the Netherlands, EZraft has developed a range of tendons made from the same material as kite or wing wings. Reinforced with a dacron envelope, this material is extremely light and offers excellent rigidity.

The unit is fully inflatable, and requires no rigid structural parts apart from the transom.

The structure of an Ezraft is made up of four inflatable tubes. The two on the sides provide stability, while the two on the bottom act as the floor. Each model is fitted with an HDPE (high-density polyethylene) transom, which can accept a maximum of 4 hp. A 2.5 hp motor seems sufficient to take full advantage of the EZraft's capabilities.

There are no rigid floors or inflatable benches on an EZraft: the crew sits on the side floats or directly on the stretched canvas. All models in the range are self-draining.

A featherweight compared with traditional appendages

EZraft offers a range of 6 models, from 2.5 m to 3.1 m. The 270 we discovered has a payload of 350 kg and weighs just 11 kg.

In comparison with a PVC or Hypalon model, a conventional tender weighs around thirty kilos but has a higher payload.

The Ezraft 270 takes up very little space, since when folded into its bag, it fits into the equivalent of a large piece of carry-on luggage. This minimal footprint will be most welcome on small units or in a car trunk.

Complete equipment

The electric pump supplied with the EZraft ensures inflation in less than 3 minutes. The telescopic oars are in place and ready to use. Their locations are reinforced against scratching by patches glued in strategic places.

Some twenty handles are distributed throughout the boat, making it easy to carry and allowing all crew members to hold on.

A reinforced towing ring is sewn onto the central flange, and a large central pocket is fastened between the side flanges.

A versatile product for occasional use

The EZraft's extreme lightness may nevertheless have a few drawbacks: in strong headwinds, you'll have to be careful with the throttle, and any towing will have to be done at very low speed. For intensive use, a conventional model is preferable, as PVC or Hypalon are more resistant in the long term.

Nevertheless, the EZraft is a fine innovation in a conservative market. It's quick to install and lightweight, making it a real asset. As for price, the 2.5 m is priced at ?949 incl. VAT, which puts it in the same price bracket as a conventional mid-range annex.
