The second edition of the New-York Vendée Les Sables-d'Olonne, on May 29, 2024, brings together 31 skippers for a 3,200-mile adventure. The race promises to be a great match for the field, as well as a chance to improve on the reference time and set new records. It is also the last chance for skippers to qualify for the Vendée Globe 2024.

A second edition awaits

On May 29, 2024, eight years after the first edition, the New-York Vendée Les Sables-d'Olonne will welcome 31 skippers for a 3,200-mile race. The start will be at 8 p.m. French time, or 2 p.m. in the USA. The second edition, originally scheduled for 2020, fell victim to Covid and was transformed into a race to the Arctic Circle, the Vendée Arctique - Les Sables-d'Olonne. Today, the two races complement each other. Prior to the start, an exhibition race, dubbed the Vendée Liberty Show, will be held on May 24 at the foot of the Statue of Liberty.

A line-up double that of the first edition

With a doubled field compared to the last edition, the New-York Vendée Les Sables-d'Olonne will be an opportunity for everyone to measure themselves before the start of the Vendée Globe in November. The race will also be the last one to qualify and be selected for the Vendée Globe. At the end of the course, the participants in the solo round-the-world race will be announced on July 2.

Records that should be improved

In 2016, Jérémie Beyou won in 9d 16h 57min 52s. With even more technological boats and higher speeds, the time should be improved. To do so, the winner will have to reach Vendée by 1pm on June 8, 2024. Thomas Ruyant's 24-hour distance record of 539.94 miles could also be beaten.

A host of international skippers and headliners

Among the 31 skippers lining up on the starting line will be 14 international skippers, representing 11 nationalities. We'll also be discovering a new nationality in the form of Canadian Scott Shawyer, whose ambition is to take part in the Vendée Globe 2028. Among the skippers will be 5 women, including the youngest competitor in the fleet, Violette Dorange. The headliners will also be present, such as Jérémie Béyou, defending champion, Charlie Dalin, Thomas Ruyant, Yoann Richomme...
