R30, Tesla's former head of manufacturing, unveils his first electric boat

After managing the production of Tesla electric cars, John Vo founded his company to produce electric boats. He unveils his first model, the R30, a 9-m electric cabin cruiser built in Florida.

The first model of a fast electric boat

Blue Innovations Group is an electric boat builder founded by John Vo, former global head of manufacturing at Tesla. The company recently unveiled its first dayboat model, the R30. This is a 9 m cabin cruiser with an 800 hp electric inboard motor and 221 kWh battery pack. Estimated top speed is 45 knots. The company is announcing a range of 100 miles and the possibility of sailing between 6 and 8 hours, without giving any speed indications. The fast charger, with a capacity of over 350 kW, guarantees a 4-hour range after just 40 minutes' charging.

Designed and built in aluminum, in Florida, the R30, for Revolution, will be delivered at the end of 2024.

A semi-walkaround

The asymmetrical deck layout features a recessed side deckhouse on the port side, leading to the rounded bow, where a sunbathing area takes pride of place. Steps lead up to the second passavant on the gunwales. The design is underpinned by an imposing glazed wheelhouse open to the stern. This houses the cockpit, well protected by a windshield. It features two screens and a double bench seat with armrests.

A terrace overlooking the sea

A galley is positioned just behind the bench seat, with fridge, sink and grill. The cockpit, with its facing saloon, becomes a "terrace" overlooking the sea once the bulwarks and transom are lowered. Submerged steps facilitate contact with the water. Each terrace can be lowered individually.

Solar panels to power the batteries

The roof is fitted with solar panels and features extendable front and rear biminis for even greater load capacity. In total, the solar panels provide up to 2.8 kW of electricity production.

A double cabin below deck

Below deck, the cabin offers a U-shaped saloon that converts into a double berth, as well as an enclosed head. Light is provided by both side and roof windows.
