Test / Integrated steering and optional joystick for new Suzuki engines

The Suzuki DF350AMD and DF300BMD engines both feature a new integrated hydraulic steering system, with electric power assist. Now compatible with a joystick, which will be marketed directly by the Japanese motor manufacturer, we tried out these developments on Lake Maggiore.

DF350A and DF300B engine upgrades

The 4-stroke V6 DF350AMD is currently the most powerful engine in the Suzuki range, with a displacement of 4.4 litres. Accompanied in the range by the DF300BMD, these two engines are respective evolutions of the DF350A and DF300B. They retain the new crankcases, whose 4% reduced frontal width increases top speed by 2%, without increasing fuel consumption. Also new are the engine oil change system, which doesn't require taking the boat out of the water, the new transmission oil change system for easier maintenance, and the reduction in oil volume from 3.2l to 2.8l. The redesigned transmission oil path reduces oil temperature rise for improved reliability.

The first integrated steering system

What's new is the addition of Suzuki's first integrated steering system, with electric assistance. This not only frees up the rear transom or basin, but also saves space when it comes to raising the engine completely. As a result, assembly is made easier, and manoeuvrability and riding comfort are enhanced.

Optional joystick

The final new feature is the optional "Steer by Wire" joystick function, i.e. a hydroelectric system. Compatible only with these two engine models, it facilitates navigation.

It works like a conventional joystick, allowing sideways movement and 360° rotation. The Suzuki joystick offers the new "Dock" function for easy docking. This function does not involve docking the boat, but holding it towards the quay for 1 minute, the time it takes to disembark and dock. The only inconvenience that could be corrected is the sound signals emitted throughout the procedure.
