Freedom Boat Club: a new site opens on the Old Port of Marseille

Born in the United States, Freedom Boat Club continues its development in France by opening a 4th base in the Phocaean city. We went to meet its manager, Clément Coffin.

An extensive boat club network

The Freedom Boat Club was founded in 1989 in Sarasota, Florida, USA. It has 370 bases worldwide, making it the oldest and largest boat club in the world. The philosophy and purpose of this model boat club was simple: to offer its members a no-holds-barred, no-frills boating experience while joining a community of enthusiasts.

Navigation without constraints and (almost) everywhere in the world

Joining the Freedom Boat Club offers the member the possibility to sail all year round, without constraints. All you have to do is book a sailing time and pick up your boat at the agreed time. And the number of sailings in the year is unlimited in the club in which you are registered!

Freedom Boat Club offers a complete concierge service, including cleaning and refueling of the boats, so that members can fully enjoy their sea trip. Insurance, berthing and boat maintenance are the responsibility of the boat club. Only the fuel consumed must be paid for by the member.

Another advantage if you are away or on vacation: Freedom Boat Club offers you the possibility to make 4 reservations per year and per club, anywhere in the world, which allows you to vary the sailing basins.

A new base in Marseille

After Carnon, La Rochelle and Cap d'Agde, it is in Marseille that Freedom Boat Club opens its new base. Managed by Clément Coffin, a well known actor of the local nautical world, this new base has two recent semi-rigid boats, that the members will share. Measuring 7 and 8 meters, and powered by 175 and 350 horsepower engines, the boats are devoid of advertising markings, so that each member can make the most of his or her boat. And everything is done to facilitate the members' outings, as Clément explains to us: "In addition to providing two boats, which will be renewed every four years, we also offer a catering service with local actors. And we lend equipment depending on the day's program: towed buoy, masks and fins for adults and children."

Navigation and user-friendliness

The Freedom Boat Club not only offers the possibility to navigate easily, but also brings to the members the access to a club of exchanges and meetings, as Clément explains to us: "The idea is to create a community around a passion. For individuals, we will set up friendly and family initiatives, while initiatives for professionals can be initiated, to develop a professional network. We will organize afterwork and group outings in order to create a human cohesion between members."

How to join a Boat Club?

Registration for the Freedom Boat Club is done in 2 steps:

  • once the registration is done, the member benefits from a session with a skipper. In addition to the handling of the boat, the skipper will take the time to go around the water and some anchorages.
  • once the training is completed, the new member has an application that allows him to reserve a navigation slot

How much does it cost?

For the first year, the entry fee is 2200 euros. To this must be added a monthly payment of 400 euros with a minimum commitment of one year. For its opening, the Marseille base is launching an offer by reducing the entry fee to 1200 euros, and by offering the coastal license to new sailors!
