Whitbread 1977-78, an eventful and tense stopover in Rio

Episode 8 on the film of the 1977-78 Whitbread. We meet the sailors of this crewed round the world race. Masterfully filmed by Yves Huissenot, this report is proposed in 9 episodes. With beautiful images of anthology.

The world of ocean racing is back in Rio for the prize-giving ceremony before the final leg. The crews who have just lived, in Dantesque conditions, the navigations in the Southern seas take good time under the tropics.

The prize-giving ceremony, already boycotted by the French crews following the disqualification of Pen Duick VI - see previous episodes - degenerated somewhat. It is clear that the crew members need to relax.

Eric Tabarly in cold anger

But the race continues and the last leg between Rio and Portsmouth is being prepared. Discussions are going well about the organization. Yves Hussenot's camera captures some rare moments. With a small piece of anthology when Eric Tabarly gives his vision of the English rules of the race. He asks to take the start, without knowing if he will be able to be requalified. In view of his results, Pen Duick VI was leading the race, but the English did not see it that way and changed the rules so as not to accept the yacht's ballast. Eric Tabarly is bitter, very bitter.

Departure to Portsmouth

Finally the race started again with Tabarly. We follow Gauloise II, skippered by Eric Loizeau, which crosses a platform at sea. The captain embarked on the racing yacht for a friendly coffee. Another era when we see the racers and their way of sailing with hammock and chess on the deck!
