The legend lives on: commemorating Éric Tabarly's victory at the start of the Transat CIC

Skipper Eric Tabarly's victory in the 1964 English Transat launched ocean racing into a new dimension, opening it up to the general public. On Saturday April 27, 2024, the day before the start of the 15th edition of The Transat CIC, a tribute day will be organized in Lorient in the presence of his daughter Marie Tabarly and some of the best sailors of the time.

As the sixtieth anniversary of Éric Tabarly's first victory in the Transat in 1964 approaches, French sailing is preparing to celebrate a key moment in its nautical history. This victory, which launched a new era for ocean racing, marking a turning point towards increased popularity and wider media coverage, will be commemorated on Saturday, April 27, 2024. The event, scheduled to take place in Lorient on the eve of the start of the 15th edition of The Transat CIC, will be an opportunity to remember the exploits of the sailor who paved the way for many generations of sailors.

A living heritage in Lorient

The Éric Tabarly Tribute Day offers a unique opportunity to delve into France's rich maritime heritage. The event will be held near the Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly, an emblematic site dedicated to the sailor's memory. Participants will be able to visit Pen Duick II, the legendary monohull with which Tabarly won the Transat in 27 days. Activities such as the creation of a fresco by an artist-graffiti artist and documentary screenings will enrich the day, illustrating Tabarly's lasting impact on ocean racing and national maritime culture.

A link between past, present and future

The presence of Marie Tabarly, Éric's daughter, adds a personal and contemporary dimension to the tribute. Participating with panache in the Ocean Globe Race aboard the Pen Duick VI, Marie embodies the continuity of the family's commitment to competitive sailing. Her interaction with her father's former companions, Jean-Pierre Couteleau and Gérard Petipas, as well as the planned discussions, will bridge the gap between past exploits and future aspirations for French sailing.
