The Trisbal 36, a comfortable sailing boat for long-distance cruising

The Trisbal 36 is a ballasted aluminum dinghy of nearly 11m in length. Nearly 60 examples of this series of houseboats were built by the Chantier Maritime de Paimpol Fécamp between 1978 and 1981. Presentation of a sailing boat particularly adapted to long distance cruising downwind.

Identity card of an aluminum ballasted dinghy

The design of the Trisbal 36 was entrusted to Jean-Pierre Brouns, from the Trismus design office.

For this cruising monohull, the naval architect imagined a ballasted aluminum dinghy AG4MC, equipped with two daggerboards. The hull of the Trisbal 36 has 3 chines, the boat is rigged as a cutter.

The Trisbal 36 has a rudder on the transom, and did not have a skirt when it was built. Some of the boats have since been redesigned and now have a platform at the stern. If the original installation has not been modified by the owners, the sails are docked.

The sailboat in figures :

  • 12 m overall length
  • 10.98 m hull length
  • 3,72 m of master bau
  • 7 tons empty
  • 71 m² of upwind sail area

Over forty years old, the Trisbal 36, like all aluminum boats, requires special attention to electrolysis.

A sailboat with a seaworthy attitude

The Trisbal 36 is a robust boat. With its long, hollow keel, dual center and aft daggerboards, and chine hull, it has good stability underway. At about one pound, the boat balances quickly and the crew enjoys comfortable sailing at almost any point of sail.

The boat has a large, closed cockpit and a narrow, off-center companionway, which makes it safe to sail. By playing with the two daggerboards, it is possible to leave the helm for a while without losing the course.

Shallow draft and possibility of grounding

With a draft of 2.20 m on the lower daggerboards and only 1 m on the upper daggerboards, the Trisbal 36 is in the category of shallow draft ballasted dinghies.

The configuration of the hull and the wide keel sole allow the boat to be placed on hard ground without the use of crutches.

Comfortable facilities for life on board

When the Trisbal 36 was built, the sponsors had a choice of several interior layouts. Over the years and with changes in crew, the boats have undergone transformations. Today, each Trisbal 36 is unique.

Several possible arrangements

Inside, the headroom is 1.80 m. The long roof windows and deck panels make the spaces bright.

Depending on the layout, 4 to 6 people can sleep on board. Sailboats generally have a Breton bed in the forepeak and a double cabin on the starboard side. Some can also lower the large saloon table to form an additional double bed, or have a cabin with a coffin bench on the port side.

The toilet is located either on the port side aft or in a central block on starboard. Not all boats are equipped with a shower.

Ideal storage capacities for the big trip

Consistent trunks, large storage spaces under the floorsâeuros¦ the interior of the sailboat is arranged with many storage spaces, allowing to carry out consistent provisioning before long crossings.

The Trisbal 36 also benefits from large water tanks âeuros 400 liters âeuros and diesel âeuros 300 liters: a point not to be overlooked which gives it a great autonomy.

Another comfortable feature to note is the two large lockers in the forepeak, serving respectively as an anchor locker and a sail locker. They are in addition to the two aft cockpit lockers and allow you to store fenders, mooring lines and other items so as not to clutter up the deck.
