Pregnancy on a sailboat: what is life like on board?

Pregnancy while sailing often rhymes with seasickness

Experiencing pregnancy and childbirth during a cruise is a unique experience that requires good preparation! Once the steps are anticipated, what is life like on board? Guillemette and Vianney tell us about their experience.

Guillemette and Vianney decided to go sailing with their three boys, aged 7, 5 and 3. Shortly before the departure, a little sailor was invited for the trip! After having planned the stages of the pregnancy as much as possible, the little family cast off from Brittany, heading for Martinique for the future birth.

Pregnancy can mean seasickness

For Guillemette, the little life she shelters manifests itself in different ways, and in particular by seasickness! On three pregnant women that their sailboat met, and who realized a transatlantic race, the sea sickness was very variable.

For her, it is still between 24 and 5 days of sea sickness after each departure, before finally being moored. It is therefore necessary that life on board and navigation can be assured without having to rely on the pregnant woman.

Pregnancy on board also means caution

You also have to accept a different place on board when you are pregnant at sea. Indeed, between five and eight months of pregnancy, it is no longer a question of balancing in the cockpit with a sheet in each hand, or reefing at the foot of the mast!

So, as for Guillemette, when you dream of learning to sail, finding yourself lying in your bunk is inevitably a little frustrating. As she says: "Sea and pregnancy, it is a double school of humility! "

A pregnancy on a sailboat is also a lot of fun!

Fortunately, pregnancy on board is not all bad times and worries. As Vianney and Guillemette say: "It is first and foremost the joy of being on the water, and the even greater joy of being there with your family!"

The boat trip allows the attention to the other, and in particular that of each one which turns little by little towards this small being, to prepare him a place on board. These are therefore above all unique and precious moments.
