The start of the offshore race with the Transat
Through his book, Ocean Races, 50 Legendary Adventures, Olivier Bourbon takes us through 60 years of ocean racing. It all starts with the mythical Transat in 1960, called at the time OSTAR, the first transatlantic race in history that made the legendary Sir Chichester famous. Four years later, Tabarly also forged his legend on this same race.
A story for every race
Through the 208 pages of the book, one discovers or rediscovers the great races that have seen the birth of talented sailors and have become over time essential: the Transat, the Vendée Globe, the Mini Transat, the Route du Rhum, the Transat Jacque Vabre, the Fastnet Raceâeuros¦ But also records such as that of the Atlantic Ocean, the Jules Verne Trophy or the single-handed round the world race.

The evolution over the years
If the beginnings of ocean racing are marked by gigantism, the tragedies that have occurred will force the organizers to limit the size of the boats or to take safety measures to avoid the worst. The last Vendée Globe, which took place in 2020-2021, and whose story closes the book, is proof of this with the rescue of Kevin Escoffier.

Testimonies of great sailors
Prefaced by Clarisse Crémer and enriched with testimonies of great names in ocean racing, such as Loïck Peyron, Michel Desjoyeaux, Franck Cammas, Samantha Davies, we read with avidity and ease these stories that have seen the birth of the great stars of sailing. We also discover the boats that have also made history, by their size, their innovations or their track record.

A book for everyone
Lovers of the sea, racing enthusiasts or simply curious landlubbers, eager to understand the attraction of sailors to the seas of the globe, Races au large, 50 aventures légendaires is aimed at all audiences. Easy to read and illustrated with period images, it can be read chronologically or by picking and choosing from the various adventures.
