Video / Windelo 54, a cruising catamaran that does nothing like the others

The Windelo shipyard presents its 54 footer. This catamaran takes up the eco-responsible DNA of the brand: construction in recycled foam and basalt fiber, electric propulsion and above all a forward cockpit. The test of this boat allowed us to fully validate the concept.

After the Windelo 50, the 54 is the second model in the range of this shipyard based in Canet-en-Roussillon. Still designed by the Barrot-Neuman tandem, this 16.50 m cruising catamaran is a high-performance boat. Indeed, this one declares only 12,3 tons under the weight!

With its two vertical daggerboards in the center of the floats, a sail area of just under 200 m2 upwind and a gennaker of the same size, this Windelo 54 does not hesitate to lengthen its stride as soon as the opportunity arises.

Environmentally responsible construction and use

Constructed in a foam sandwich, Windelo boats stand out by using recycled PTFE for the foam and basalt fiber. Solutions that facilitate recycling at the end of the boat's life. In addition, a Windelo is powered by electric propulsion, with battery recharging provided by a large solar park on the deckhouse and the possibility of using the engines to generate electricity when under sail. So many ecological attentions which show the will of the shipyard to progress in this field.

An accessible deckhouse and a low boom

We also appreciate the seaworthiness and the ease of maneuvering, as we can see when we furl the mainsail before reaching the anchorage.

Four double cabins

This catamaran has a standard layout with two cabins per hull. In the aft cabins, there is a large double bed (160 cm) always ideally placed in front of the porthole. The passageway towards the front serves a separate toilet and shower, as well as another double cabin with a side porthole.

Despite the presence of the daggerboard, the circulation is fluid in the hulls. But it is the nacelle which remains the masterpiece of the boat.

A modular center pod

On the Windelo 54, there is no isolated cockpit or deckhouse, all the spaces form one. euros at the front, the maneuvering station, the kitchen just behind and a dining area facing a watch - or nap - berth

The cockpit becomes a terrace when you lower the platform and install the dining area. All this is possible only if the large rear door is raised, with the help of an electric winch of course.

Special attention, the skipper has a cabin in the starboard bow. A sleeping area with a WC - washbasin - shower accessible through a deck hatch.

Centering of weights

Windlass and anchor chain are stored on the central beam. As well as the boat's main tanks, water, fuel and batteries. A good way to center the weights.

An electric motorization

When you leave the mooring, there is no noise or smell to disturb the calm of the water. The Windelo 54 is powered by two electric motors of 20 kW each. These are powered by a 48 V lithium battery pack which provides several hours of autonomy. In addition to the solar panels on the deckhouse, a generator completes this installation.

A cockpit at the front of the gondola

Another special feature of the Windelo is the position of the cockpit at the foot of the mast. All maneuvers are performed from this position and you have a good view of the sail plan. The electric winches are ideally placed in front of the piano.

With the sliding doors, the cockpit can remain isolated from the saloon. But the open door configuration offers an incredible conviviality. The helm station becomes a lounge where you can talk without disturbing the watch.

The Windelo is available in 3 versions: Adventure, the most basic,Yachting with a more complete catalog of options and Sport for speed lovers.
