Yamaha Helm Master EX, the control system that makes navigation easier

Yamaha's Helm Master EX is a control system that makes sailing easier, ideal for novices. It includes a joystick for port maneuvers and an autopilot. Previously reserved for multiple engines, the joystick can now be installed on a single outboard engine with electric control from 150 to 425 hp.

Multifunction display for easy on-board control

The Helm Master EX system is available for boats equipped with Yamaha outboard engines from 150 hp. It consists of a 5" or 7" multi-function color touch screen with autopilot, a 6X9 side-mounted control box available in three versions including trim and speed control, control station selection, neutral control, and a joystick, now available for single electric steering engines from 150 hp. With this system, the key has been replaced by an electronic key, floating and waterproof for 10 minutes. At a distance of 80 cm from the console, it automatically unlocks the boat. It also allows to lock the start of the outboard when we leave the board.

The joystick for port maneuvers

Once in port, the joystick takes over from the steering wheel to facilitate maneuvering. It also allows you to navigate at reduced speed by pushing it against the dashboard at a speed of about 5 knots. But it is especially in the fine movements that we will appreciate its use: forward movement, backward, 360° rotation or lateral movement. The latter is not possible on a single engine installation.

We had the opportunity to test the joystick on several different units: Invictus GT 280S, Ribeye, Tempest 1000 or even Leader 12.5 WA with 2x300 hp and the use is relatively simple and responsive, even on the heavier models. The movements are fine and allow to moor without having to touch the electric controls and the steering wheel. The joystick has 5 speeds, the last one proving to be very fast in the movements.

Autopilot and SetPoint features for fishing

In addition to the joystick, the Helm Master Ex integrates an autopilot that allows you to enjoy the navigation, provided of course that you keep an eye on the water. Simply plan a route using waypoints, which the boat will follow while maintaining its course. Course adjustments can be made during navigation from 1 to 5 degrees via the box. It is also possible to control the speed without having to use the steering wheel or the throttle. If necessary, you can simply take over control by turning the steering wheel. After reaching its arrival point, the boat slows down by itself and activates the "Fish Point" mode. This function allows you to maintain the position of the engine, while the boat turns around.

Once again, we were able to test this function, which we usually know from sailboats. The boat keeps its course well and goes to the different waypoints, it takes the turns autonomously, and slows down well alone once arrived on its last position. The navigation remains fluid, just like the movements of the boat.

Two other options are available, the "DriftPoint", which allows the boat to move sideways while drifting, ideal for fishermen and the "Staypoint" which acts as a kind of virtual anchor.

Many other features are also included in the Helm Master Ex such as the speed regulator âeuros the boat maintains the planned speed according to the sea conditions encountered âeuros and the trim assist, which automatically regulates the boatâ??s trim, a solution that will appeal to novice boaters.
