Boat at anchor or the joys of the dinghy

Whether it's a residential or fairground mooring, this exotic way of mooring your boat requires the use of a tender!

Indeed, in some navigation basins, boats at anchor are more numerous than boats at the pontoon, especially in tidal areas.

This is particularly the case in Brittany where there are many regulated anchorage areas. Out of approximately 80,000 registered vessels, 26,000 are at the pontoon and 54,000 on buoys. This confirms that the use of dinghies by residential boaters is important.

Having your boat on a buoy has its charm:

  • Without moving from the anchorage, first change of scenery
  • You can sail directly and return to the anchorage without turning on the engine

However, we must admit that access to the boat is more complicated.

No other alternatives than to take its annex .

But beware, every year, accidents remind us that taking a dinghy to the shore can be risky. The most frequent accident is during the passage from the dinghy to the boat and vice versa . This is when the risk of falling overboard is greatest. Especially if you are sailing on ships with closed transoms.

Some anchorages can be located quite far from the bank, located in areas of currents or areas of strong passages leading to risks, again of falling.

The choice of the annex is essential

We still see, too often, boaters joining their boat on small dinghies, not very stable. When you are alone, and without equipment, the risk is low, but to embark on this type of dinghy with two or even three people, is a balancing act.

It is therefore preferable to opt for double hull or inflatable models which are often more stable.

Some precautions

The first and most obvious is the life jacket (PFD). It is even more essential on board a dinghy than on the boat. You can also leave a piece of it behind your dinghy, which can be used in case of a fall to establish a link with the dinghy.

Last precaution, even with a dinghy equipped with an engine (electric...), an oar or two paddles (and oarlocks) must be on board. It may also be wise to equip your boat with a rigid and fixed ladder that will facilitate boarding and disembarking in case of a closed transom.

In case of a fall in the sea it can also be very useful..

In conclusion, in the anchorage area to embark on your boat :

  • Have an annex in good condition
  • Do not overload the schedule
  • Wear and have worn checked PFDs !

It is worth noting that many mooring area managers (MELAs) or port managers with buoyed moorings are beginning to organize what is known as "a harbor service."

Upon VHF call or appointment, a respectable sized shuttle will drop you off at your boat. Just like our neighbors across the Channel do in all the rivers of Cornouaille.

In the meantime, good wind and good sea!
