Know-how / Port manoeuvres by motorboat: leave the dock safely

To leave a pontoon safely, there are maneuvers to perform and steps to follow. This tutorial is only valid if your motor boat is an outboard and moored parallel to the dock, with mooring lines at the front and rear. Here's how to do it.

Preparing for departure

1 - Start the engine

2 - Pass the mooring lines in double, to be able to release them easily from the boat

The wind comes from the earth

This is the simplest case since the wind is strong enough to move your boat away from the dock.

1 - First, check that nothing hinders your maneuver and that you have enough space to leave the pontoon without any problem

2 - Cast off the bowline

3 - Let the boat move away from the dock without starting the engine

4 - When the bow is far enough away, release the rear mooring line

5 - Clutch forward and steer the wheel out to sea to prevent the stern of the boat from hitting the dock. You can also use a boat hook to push your boat away from the dock.

The wind comes from the sea

In this case, the wind or the current sticks your boat to the dock. You will have to maneuver to prevent your boat from getting damaged on the dock.

1 - Cast off the rear mooring line

2 - Put the clutch in reverse and steer the steering wheel out to sea so that the stern of your motorboat moves away. Do not force the throttle.

3 - When the stern is far enough away, release the front mooring line

4 - Continue backwards while putting your steering wheel straight.

5 - Let your steering wheel out to sea and clutch forward if there is enough room. During this maneuver, the stern of your motorboat will get closer to the dock, so check that you have backed up enough not to hit the dock. If there is not enough room forward, move as far back as possible.

6 - You can repeat this maneuver several times depending on the space you need to maneuver safely. You can use the pike pole if necessary.
