Co-navigation, a few rules to make the most of it

To provide a framework for co-navigation, the Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition has published two flyers reminding owners and holidaymakers of a few rules.

For several years now, co-browsing - in the manner of carpooling - has been in vogue. Boat owners choose - via a crew exchange, for example - to take crew members on board. In this way, they share the costs and sail together as they wish.

However, co-browsing must be supervised and above all occasional. It is for this reason that during this summer period, the Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition reminds pleasure boat owners and holidaymakers of the rules to be respected.

Tips for pleasure boat owners

"Co-navigation is part of the values of conviviality, solidarity and sharing, specific to yachting."

So that the activity is not a punishable disguised benefit:

  • It has to be casual, it's not a business.
  • The amount requested must not exceed the costs generated by the trip, divided by the number of people on board (including yourself).

As skipper, the owner must also ask himself the right questions. Indeed, he is responsible for his crew and his boat.

  • Can you vouch for your compétences??
  • Is your ship in good condition état??
  • Is your security equipment complet??
  • Give safety instructions to your crew.

Beware of fraud

In January 2018, a 49-year-old boater had been convicted by the court of Quimper to 6?000 euros fine, of which 1?000 euros suspended and 1?000 euros extra for the fine for concealed work and improper use of a pleasure boat for personal use. The latter offered sea trips on dedicated websites for Sainte-Marine.

Advice for visitors and holidaymakers

"Treat yourself and make your choices transparent. Take responsibility for your own safety or leave it to a professional seafarer."

Co-navigating with a yachtsman:

  • Your financial participation only covers the costs incurred by the outing (fuel, mooring fees, picnic, drinks, etc.)
  • Co-navigation is a convivial moment, an experience partagée?; making it a business is a délit?!

Be an actor of your safety in co-navigation:

  • Check the weather forecast before you go out
  • Check the good condition of the vessel
  • Is all the safety equipment on board and entretenu?? Is it shown to you and expliqué??
  • The skipper has the basic qualifications required for the operation of a pleasure craft.

Call a professional skipper

In case of doubt, contact a sea professional for your outing. Once again, the latter will have to be certified and able to present diplomas.

  • He holds a master's certificate (Master 200 or above), issued by the Administration.
  • He has been trained to deal with any unforeseen situation, in any weather, summer or winter.
  • He knows his limits and those of his ship
  • It can simultaneously manage navigation, your safety and your comfort on board
  • The vessel is regularly inspected by an inspection service
  • It sells a service of transport or sea trips
  • You have nothing to do: enjoy the landscape, the sea and the outing.
