Anchoring your boat can sometimes be problematic. Set in a beautiful creek, you enjoy a well-deserved night's rest when the wind rises, forcing you to go and lie down and check regularly that you are well hooked. A boat that hunts and quickly arrives and the consequences can sometimes be significant, especially if there are several of you at anchor or quite close to the coast..
To stop worrying about a failing anchorage, Henri Laurent, a seasoned navigator, designed and developed the SailGrib AA application (Anchor Alarm). As you have understood, this is an application that monitors the proper functioning of your installation and warns you in case of an anomaly. Enough to sleep soundly or to be able to go ashore without having the stress of finding your boat in the right place.
Make your manoeuvring easier
The SailGrib AA application is easy to use and does not require any handling during your operation. When you enter the bay where you are about to anchor, open your application, it takes care of everything!
Thanks to the GPS of your phone, your route from the entrance to the creek to the stop of your boat is recorded. Thus, the position of the anchor is perfectly visible on the trace and will allow to determine a zone of evitage, materialized by a red circle on the application. It is possible to modify the size of this area according to the length of the wet chain.
Adapt your turning zone
For complicated anchorages, you can adapt your avoidance area by choosing a hexagonal rather than a circular shape. By defining a surface with 6 points, you can protect yourself from a hazard, for example if the wind changes.
Alarm when leaving the turning zone
The principle is simple, the application will issue an alert if the boat leaves its anchorage area. No risk of false alarm, the alarm only goes off if the boat leaves its turning circle.
If you are on board, the alarm sounds on your phone warning you to check your chain, even if it is silent. In case you are not present on board and too far away to act quickly, you can indicate the telephone number of 2 different recipients. But in any case it will be necessary to leave a telephone on board to detect the movements of the boat.
When the alarm goes off, an SMS message containing all the mooring data and a Google Maps link will be sent to the number(s) indicated. This operation will take place every 15 minutes as your boat's position changes, until the alarm stops.
The application runs in the background and uses the latest Android techniques to reduce power consumption while maximizing position accuracy.
A free Android application and a premium version for more options
The SailGrib AA application is free of charge. A Premium subscription offers additional options:
- Define a hexagonal and editable turning zone on the screen.
- Receive an SMS in case of an alarm.
- Query the application by SMS at any time.
- Set the alarm strategy between: immediate, balanced and conservative.
- Display SailGrib WR maps (navigation and weather routing application under Android)
- Import the GPX trace from SailGrib WR if you forgot to launch the application before anchoring.
In constant evolution, the Premium application has been integrating new options since June:
- GPS reception monitoring with alarm in case of loss of reception
- Battery level monitoring with low battery alarm
During August, the Premium user will also be able to use their Navionics cards in their SailGrib AA application, provided they have a valid license for the Navionics Boating application.
